Author Gershon Ben Keren explains the philosophy behind the Krav Maga
method, which is the basis of the Israel Defense Force’s (IDF)
devastating close combat system. This book lays out a systematic
approach to self-defense and provides illustrated confrontation
scenarios paired with tailored practical responses.

Accompanied
by explicit, easy-to-follow photographs, practical combat skills are
described in step-by-step detail, along with the movement patterns
needed to make them useful in real-life settings. All of the photos in
the book were shot in real-time, demonstrating what realistic
movements—both from the attacker’s and defender’s perspective—look like.
Where applicable, techniques have been shot in the scenarios in which
they occur such as bars, restrooms, ATMs, etc. The situational
components of such violent incidents are explained, so the reader can
learn to identify, predict, and avoid violence before it occurs.

Author

Gershon Ben Keren, is a security professional who trains civilians, law enforcement officers (LEO), private security contractors and military personnel, in tactical survival – a mix of physical and non-physical skills. He is a 5th Degree Black Belt in Krav Maga (the hand-to-hand combat system of the IDF – Israeli Defense Forces), and has worked/performed a number of different roles within the security industry. He has a Master’s Degree in Psychology, and has been involved in academic research concerning violence against women. He currently runs Krav Maga Yashir Boston, a 16 000 sq ft dedicated training facility and gym in Boston, MA.

Gershon Ben Keren, began his martial arts training in Judo, at the age of 8, and went on to win regional and national titles in this sport (He holds a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Judo). In 1993 during a visit to Israel, he was introduced to Krav Maga, and his interest in reality-based self-defense began. On returning to the UK, he began training in the system in Liverpool, and later in London, eventually completing the IKMF Instructors Course, run by Eyal Yanilov and Amnon Darsa. On completion of the course, he started teaching, opening the North London Academy of Krav Maga. During his time in London, he taught several courses in effective communication and defensive tactics to various Borough Police Forces of the London Metropolitan Police Force along with programs and training to Her Majesty’s Prison Service.

In 2008 he moved to Boston, MA and opened the Boston Academy of Krav Maga. In 2009, he took part in the 27th Dennis Hisardut tournament, and began to train under Dennis Hanover, and in 2011 was inducted in to the Museum of Israeli Martial Arts. As Judo was a fundamental part of Hisardut training, he started to incorporate into the Krav Maga he’d learnt, along with other elements of traditional martial arts training (this was an approach that was common to Krav Maga during its early formation). In 2012, to make the system distinct, and separate it from the “Krav Maga” that was being taught in the US mainly as a fitness workout, he began referring to the system as Krav Maga Yashir.

In 2012, he was approached by Tuttle Publishing to write an introductory book to the approach, and in December 2014, “Krav Maga – Real World Solutions to Real World Violence” was published. The photographs in the book were all shot in real-time, and in the locations where various assaults take place, such as bars, restaurants and ATMs etc. In February 2017, his second book, “Krav Maga – Tactical Survival”, was published.

Gershon Ben Keren’s primary goal is to serve his local community (something he has done in all the locations of his schools). In 2011, he started running free women’s self-defense classes on a Saturday Morning, to make sure that financial constraints would never be a barrier for women to train. This program expanded to incorporate free training in the use of OC/Pepper Spray and in 2014 the course materials were put online and made freely available in the hope that more women would benefit from these resources. In the same year He started to teach free seminars and courses to young women who would be going to College/University for the first time (the course material was also put online).

Gershon Ben Keren, continues to update and revise his training (both academically and professionally), travelling globally to train and teach.
